A Brief History of Pies

Pies have been a beloved dessert for centuries, with roots dating from the ancient Greeks. As early as 200 B.C., the Greeks baked pies in a thick, bread-like crust. After the Romans conquered Greece, they introduced this recipe to Roman citizens and much of Europe.

At first, pies were mostly filled with meat. However, it wasn't until after the Crusaders returned to Europe in the 12th century with a taste for Arab confections that honey, sugar, and fruits began to be incorporated into these delicious treats.

The first all-fruit pies became popularized in England during the 1500s when Queen Elizabeth I grew quite fond of them. Elizabeth also loved her tarts highly sweetened with sugar, and chefs employed by nobility developed numerous recipes for fruit-filled pastries.

Nowadays, we continue to love pies just as much as our ancestors did centuries ago. In fact, many of us consider pie one of the most traditional and best-tasting desserts around.

And with our modern ovens, finer flours, refined sugars, and a greater variety of fruits, they now taste better than ever. I don't know about you, but I have yet to taste a pie that I didn't like!
