Grandma's Old-Fashioned Recipes For DessertsGrandma worked long, hard days as a pioneer rancher's wife near Airdrie, Alberta. She watered cattle, groomed horses, forked hay, and tended her large vegetable garden. She also had to quickly prepare hearty, delicious meals for her hardworking husband and nine hungry children.
Back then, nothing topped the meal off or brightened a day on the Alberta prairie like a tasty dessert. Because Grandma's time was limited, she chose quick and easy dessert recipes, the ones she knew would always turn out.
Now, Grandma's Best Dessert Recipes Are Yours

Don't you just love homemade desserts?
I can recall growing up in the 1950s and attending many family birthdays, anniversaries, and weddings where the tables fairly groaned under the weight of old-fashioned homemade treats. Can you imagine the sight?
There were yummy fruit pies, rich and flaky pastries, thickly iced layer cakes, colorful sugar cookies, crumbly date squares, nutty cinnamon rolls, fruity puddings topped with real whipped cream, and all kinds of sinfully sweet confections -- all made by my aunts and my Mom using Grandma's old-time dessert recipes. It was a dessert lover's dream!
You see, my Grandma McIlmoyle was a great cook. Her cakes, cookies, and pies were the talk of her neighborhood. She was born in 1877, and throughout her long life she collected cookbooks, clipped recipes from the old weekly newspapers, and exchanged favorites with friends and family members. Grandma also cherished the handwritten recipes passed down from her mother.
Grandma taught her six daughters how to cook. As a young girl, my mother baked several cakes and a dozen pies each week. Mom became a fantastic cook. She loved cooking and, like Grandma, she clipped the best dessert recipes from magazines and collected them in scrapbooks. She also wrote out many of Grandma's favorite recipes to use after she was married.
