The Wonder Cake From A Manhattan Bakery 30 Years Ago

by Patti
(Rockville, MD)

The "Wonder Cake" as it was known, was a dry pound cake with solid chunks of chocolate baked inside which formed a chocolate swirl. When I was a college student many years ago in the NYC area, my roommate's mother would serve this cake as a special treat, purchased at a bakery in Manhattan. I have never forgotten it. A rumor had it then that it was a favorite of Greta Garbo.

I have since asked my son who is now a student in New York to please look into this. But alas, no luck. I'd be most grateful if any of your readers have any information about this delectable dessert or could supply the Wonder Cake recipe.

Wonder Cake Recipe Found
by: Don (Webmaster)

It turns out the hard-to-find Chocolate Wonder Cake recipe is protected by copyright, and it's published on pages 276-77 of the cookbook "Secrets of a Jewish Baker" by George Greenstein, published by Ten Speed Press, Revised edition May 1, 2007.

You can buy the book online, or you might find a copy in your local library. If you wish to buy it online, I have arranged so you can order it from my Cake Making Supplies page at a discounted price. If the book is still available, you'll find it pictured on the page.
