Dessert Recipe News From Grandma's DayMaking The Most Of ApplesThe taste of the apple carries its own appeal -- it is not necessary to argue the health value of apples to get people to eat them.
Apple Rings Recipe -- One egg, one tablespoon melted butter, salt, one-half cup milk, one-half cup flour, one tablespoon sugar, three to four apples. Beat egg yolk, add butter, salt, and one-half the milk. Stir in the flour and sugar to make a smooth batter. Add remainder of milk and fold in stiffly beaten egg white. Wash and core apples, but do not pare. Slice one-half inch thick, dip in batter and fry in deep fat, 385°F. Drain on soft paper and sprinkle with granulated sugar.
Apple Crumble Recipe -- This is a good substitute for apple pie. Slice apples into a buttered pie plate or shallow pudding dish. Mix together as you would for pie crust, 1 cup flour and 1/3 cup butter and work in 1/4 cup brown sugar to make a crumbly mixture. Sprinkle the apples with granulated sugar and nutmeg. Spread the flour mixture over the top and bake until the apples are cooked and the top well browned. Serve warm with cream.
Perfuming The House"A custom which my mother has adhered to ever since I can remember, and which I think is a very charming one," writes Jessie Heath Caldwell in The Queen, "is to burn lavender seeds to perfume the house. After a meal has been prepared there is apt to be an odor of cooking, be it what it may; the best and most agreeable way of dispelling this is to put a teaspoonful of ordinary lavender seeds (which are inexpensive to buy) on a frying pan, and let them cook and smoke gently. The result is a delicate scent of lavender all over the house and there is none pleasanter."
Try An Easy Novelty Dessert RecipeServing cottage pudding is one appetizing way to use leftover cake. Make a generous amount of your favorite dessert sauce, lemon, chocolate, or butterscotch, and pour it liberally over squares of cake. Chocolate and butterscotch sauces are best served hot. Lemon sauce should be cold and thick. Here are more suggestions:- Over each serving, pour red raspberry sauce.
- Or, top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings.
- Or, pour on Log Cabin Syrup and add a few chopped nuts.
- Delicious with the mellow flavor of canned, sliced peaches and juice.
- Bright scarlet strawberry sauce glorifies this novelty dessert.
