Party Line
When You've Finished Reading Grandma's Dessert Recipes, Make Yourself A Coffee & Join In The Fun
We had an old-time party line when I was a boy on the farm. The neighbors on our road shared the same telephone line, and you had to listen to the ring to make sure that the incoming call was for your house before answering. Ours was three long rings while my aunt's across the road was two longs and a short.
When you picked up the receiver to make a call, you would sometimes hear people talking and would have to wait your turn to use the phone. You could secretly listen in on conversations, but you had to be really careful not to make a noise because breathing too close to the mouthpiece or a quick receiver hangup would get you caught, and Mom would not be pleased if she found out.
There was no such thing as a private call then, and if someone picked up their receiver and recognized you and the person you were talking to, they might even join in on the conversation. It was great fun at times, similar to today's online chat rooms and a welcome social diversion.
Here, you can participate in a party-line of sorts with friendly folk from around the world. Share thoughts and comments, read and reflect, take a dessert poll, or (coming soon) even create your own Web page to publish your Mom's or Grandma's favorite dessert recipes.
