Pull Up A Chair And Join In The Fun

old time telephone operators and party line We had a party line when I was a youngster. The neighbors along our road all shared the same telephone line, and you had to listen to the "ring" to make sure that the incoming call was for your house before answering. I can recall that our ring was three long rings.

If you picked up the receiver to make a call and heard people talking, you would have to wait your turn to use the phone. You could secretly listen in on conversations, but you had to be really quiet because breathing too close to the mouthpiece would get you caught, and Mom would not be pleased.

Sometimes, if someone picked up their receiver and recognized the person you were talking to, they might even join in on the conversation. It was great fun and similar to today's online chat rooms and a welcome social diversion.
