Gloves Cookie Recipe
by Rose
(United States)
I've been looking for a cookie recipe called "gloves" or "wands." It is a dough that you make into a knot and deep fry. I'm sure the recipe is out there. The word for glove in Italian is "guanto."
Rose, after some digging, I discovered that the recipe you're looking for happens to be a Guanti Recipe, an old Italian cookie recipe.
Guanti (Italian for gloves) is the name for these cookies, but they're also called Wandi, which seems to be an English-language derivative of their original Italian name.
These knot-shaped fried cookies are often served on holidays and at marriages and other special family celebrations, and they sometimes go by the name of "love knots."
Let's hope that someone has an old family recipe for Guanti that they're willing to share with us. I'd love to try these too.

Recipe for Italian Fried Bow Cookies by: Martha
I have located two recipes for Italian fried cookies that are tied into knots. However, in my old cookbooks they are called Bow Cookies. This may be a good place for you to start. I will only print one recipe here since they are so similar.
I grew up in a Connecticut town with many Italian-American families and loved the huge platters of cookies made for all the major holidays!
Ingredients:
3 eggs, well beaten 3 tablespoons sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon vanilla 3 cups flour Oil for frying Confectioners' sugar
In a large bowl, mix the eggs, sugar, salt, vanilla, and flour until well blended. Taking a small part of the dough at a time, roll it out very thin and cut into strips about 1 1/2-inches by 6-inches. Make a slit on one end and pull the other end of the dough through the slit. Fry in oil until golden brown, then remove and drain on paper towels. Sprinkle with confectioners' sugar or drizzle with honey and grated orange zest.
Yield: This recipe makes about 4 dozen bow cookies.
