Caramel Layer Cake

by Page Barker
(Bradenton, FL)

Hello. My name is Page and I live in FL. I was raised in Huntsville (HSV), AL and am a true southern girl. My grandmother used to make a caramel cake that was 3 layers. She poked holes in these layers and poured some kind of liquid over it, maybe milk sweetened with sugar; I don't know. Then the caramel icing was poured over the 3 layers and it set smooth.

I have tried all kinds of recipes. Some have been close as to the flavor, but the icing is usually a spreadable one, which is not like hers, and no one has had the liquid part to pour over the cakes. It kept them so moist!

She was born and raised in Birmingham, AL. I hope one of you happens to have this recipe for the toppings!

I actually have the cake recipe minus the toppings. She used it for her Fresh Pineapple Cake with divinity icing. She also used it for her Coconut Cake, and her Fudge Cake. All of these cakes had a liquid poured over the layers. The pineapple used the juice from the crushed pineapple, but the others I am not sure. I think the coconut one used the milk from the coconut (they grated their own) and sweetened it with sugar.

Thanks.

It Sounds Delicious!
by: Don (Webmaster)

Page, your grandmother's caramel cake sounds absolutely delicious. Let's hope that someone can supply the delicious topping recipe.

Any chance that you could post the cake recipe itself here in the Comments? I'm sure many would enjoy trying it, and it might help to jog someone's memory about the topping recipes.

Carmel Layer Cake Recipe
by: Linda C

Hi, I remember eating a cake like this years ago, and it was made with sweetened condensed milk. I don't have the recipe, but hopefully maybe this ingredient will help in the search.

My Mom's Caramel Icing Recipe
by: Anonymous

My mom used to make a caramel icing by taking the label off cans of sweetened condensed milk and boiling the unopened cans in water for two hours. After that, let them cool, open them using a can opener, and scoop the thick caramel out. It won't pour any more, but it is still soft. You can mix that with a bit of marshmallow creme or use as is on cake.
