Homemade Caramel Apple Recipe

Sweet & Salty Candy Apple Recipe

Making this homemade caramel apple recipe from scratch offers a new twist on the traditional candy apple recipe , and the results taste so sensational.

Believe me, you will love the sweet and salty taste of the chewy caramel taffy combined with the fresh taste of the Granny Smith apple. Absolutely delicious! This unique taffy apple recipe is bound to become a favorite Halloween treat in your household. So be prepared to make lots!

Homemade Caramel Apple Recipe From Scratch

This recipe for candy apples is adapted from one found in Mom's old recipe scrapbook.

6 Granny Smith apples
6 wooden sticks or skewers
1 (14 ounce) package individually wrapped caramels, unwrapped
2 tablespoons water
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1-1/2 tablespoons coarse salt
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
Extra chocolate chips for decorating

Insert wooden sticks or skewers 3/4 of the way into the stem end of each apple. Combine caramels and water in a saucepan over low to medium heat. Stir often to get a smooth caramel mixture. Dip apples into hot caramel and carefully twirl to produce an even coating.

Place caramel-coated apples standing up on a sheet of foil or a cookie sheet for easy decorating and cooling. Sprinkle evenly with the coarse salt and place in the fridge.

Melt chocolate chips in a small pot over boiling water while stirring until the melted chocolate is smooth and creamy. Randomly drizzle melted chocolate over the apples. Sprinkle with the extra chocolate chips. Return to refrigerator to cool until ready to serve and eat.

Note: In our modern-day kitchens, we can also melt the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl. This is easiest if you microwave for 30-40 seconds on low power, stir, and repeat until you have a bowl of smooth, creamy, melted chocolate. Watch the chocolate carefully, though, to prevent burning.
