Applesauce Cake With A Thick Crust

by tcts4
(United States)

I am looking for an applesauce cake recipe my Nana used to make. She made her applesauce cake in an 8x8 inch square pan. It had a thick crust on the bottom and up the sides, with an "applesauce like" filling.

Every recipe I find has the middle as a cake-type center -- not what I want. I have been searching for this recipe for years with no luck. If someone can help, it would be much appreciated!

Found An Applesauce Cake Recipe
by: JimKC222

I recently acquired two recipe boxes full of old recipes going back 50 to 60 years ago. This recipe for applesauce cake was one of them. It is not an 8x8 pan, but it is a 13x9 pan. Possibly the same thing? I will give you this one to check out. Good luck.

Applesauce Cake Recipe

Ingredients:

1/2 cup shortening
2 cup sugar
1 large egg (1/3 cup)
1-1/2 cup thick unsweetened applesauce
2-1/2 cups sifted flour
1-1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1-1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon each cloves and allspice
1/2 cup water
1 cup walnuts, cut up

Directions:

1. cream shortening & sugar till fluffy.
2. Beat in egg, then applesauce.
3. Mix and sift flour, baking soda, salt, and spices together.
4. Stir in alternately with water.
5. Bake 45-50 minutes, minimally, in greased and floured 13x9x2 oblong pan.
6. Cool on rack & frost as desired.

Hope this is something close to what you're looking for.
