Antique Baking Molds
Victorian Cooks Loved Using Baking Molds To Make Fancy Desserts
The antique baking molds illustrated are fine examples of a nineteenth-century crown mold, French pie mold, jelly mold, melon mold, rice mold, and a round pudding mold.
These molds (or moulds) were quite common in Victorian kitchens. Cooks often used them when making fancy dessert dishes.
Also shown are two antique baking pans: a lady finger pan and a muffin pan. My wife and I still have several of my Grandmother's old muffin pans that look similar to the one illustrated. Though antiques, they still do the job well.
Nowadays, antique moulds and baking pans such as these are considered collector's items, and they sometimes fetch considerable prices. However, bargains have been found at garage sales.
Antique Mold IllustrationsThese vintage illustrations are taken from the book "Miss Parloa’s New Cook Book: A Guide to Marketing and Cooking" by Miss Maria Parloa, published by C. T. Dillingham, New York, in 1882.
You can still find some of these old dessert moulds at antique stores and some estate auctions. They are sometimes available at a reasonable price and make wonderful decorations for displaying in the kitchen.
I hope you enjoyed viewing the vintage baking moulds and pans that are often referred to in Grandma's old-fashioned recipes; it's interesting to see what they actually looked like.
Of course, modern dessert molds and cake baking pans come in many shapes and sizes, and can be easily purchased online at affordable prices. Today's space-age materials make them nonstick and much easier to use.
Be sure to look at the many other items of interest as well as the old-fashioned dessert recipes on this website.
