Welcome

Hi Everybody,

Well, it's 2010 now, and we're nearing Saint Valentine's Day. While Valentine's Day isn't a statutory holiday, it does offer an uplifting break for those of us in the midst of a snowy winter. And, it offers a great opportunity to tell your friends and loved ones how much you truly care about them.

This ezine edition features a vintage Fannie Farmer recipe for making a delicious chocolate nougat layer cake that would make the perfect finish to any St. Valentine's Day dinner. Farmer's recipe for her famous White Mountain cream frosting is also included along with my favorite popcorn recipe. Plus, there's also a couple of new dessert pages to report.

And while you're visiting my site, take a few minutes to enjoy the old-time radio programs. They sre really special! You can find them by clicking on "Old Time Radio" in the site's left-hand navbar.

Happy Saint Valentine's Day on February 14th!

Warm regards,

Don

An Important P.S.

My good friend Jill Carty of Lakefield, Ontario, Canada founded a Canadian Registered Charity called The Julia Project Foundation dedicated to helping children around the world who are poverty stricken and unable to help themselves.

Funds are urgently needed to help Haitian orphans suffering from the effects of the recent earthquake. No donation is considered too small. Every dollar counts. Please help by giving whatever you can.

A Little Gift For You

Grandma McIlmoyle's Little Dessert Book (depicted above) features 23 old-fashioned dessert recipes that Grandma collected in a little notebook and wrote in her own handwriting. She began her little recipe book while homesteading on the Alberta prairie in the early 1900s.

You'll not only view the recipes as Grandma wrote them in her little book, but I have also included a transcript of the recipes for easier reading. It's my little tribute to Grandma and her recipes, and the ebook is yours for the downloading.

There is no charge for it.

The PDF ebook is my gift to you for subscribing!

Enjoy reading it.

Note: You won't find the link to this PDF ebook on my website. This link is only here for newsletter subscribers, so take advantage of it and download your copy of Grandma McIlmoyle's Little Dessert Book now.

The ebook is in Adobe Acrobat PDF format so you need the no-cost Adobe Reader to view its contents. Adobe Reader is already installed on most PC and Mac computers.

As time goes on, I plan to offer other complimentary ebooks to my newsletter subscribers only, so keep watching in future newsletters.

Old Fashioned Recipe

Top off your St. Valentines Day dinner with and old fashioned chocolate dessert cake from Fannie Farmer's cookbook. This chocolate layer cake has between its layers and on its top her famous White Mountain Cream frosting.

Miss Farmer's Chocolate Nougat Cake Recipe

1/4 cup of butter, 1-1/2 cups of powdered sugar, 1 egg, 1 cup of milk, 2 cups of bread flour, 3 teaspoonfuls of baking powder, 1/2 teaspoonful of vanilla, 2 squares of chocolate - melted, 1/2 cup of powdered sugar, 2/3 cup of almonds blanched and shredded.

Cream the butter, add gradually one and one-half cups of sugar, and egg unbeaten; when well mixed, add two-thirds milk, flour mixed and sifted with baking powder, and vanilla. To melted chocolate add one-third cup of powdered sugar, place on range, add gradually remaining milk, and cook until smooth. Cool slightly and add to cake mixture. Bake fifteen to twenty minutes in round layer-cake pans till done. (Try 300°F) Put between layers and on top of cake White Mountain Cream sprinkled with almonds. --Boston Cooking School Cook Book by Fannie Merritt Farmer

White Mountain Cream Frosting Recipe

1 cup sugar
1/3 cup cold water
White 1 egg, beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla or 1/2 tablespoon lemon juice

Put sugar and water in saucepan, and stir to prevent sugar from adhering to saucepan; heat gradually to boiling-point, and boil without stirring until syrup will thread when dropped from tip of spoon or tines of silver fork. Pour syrup gradually on beaten white of egg, beating mixture constantly, and continue beating until of right consistency to spread; then add choice of flavoring and pour over cake, spreading evenly with back of spoon. Crease as soon as firm.

If not beaten long enough, frosting will run; if beaten too long, it will not be smooth. Frosting beaten too long may be improved by adding a few drops of lemon juice or boiling water. This frosting is soft inside, and has a glossy surface. If frosting is to be ornamented with nuts or candied cherries, place them on frosting as soon as spread. --Boston Cooking School Cook Book by Fannie Merritt Farmer

And Now...

For an added treat in the evening, try this easy recipe for coating popped corn with caramelized brown sugar. I loved nibbling on this as a kid; it was one of my favorite treats. It's so simple to prepare, and it makes a nice change from buttered popcorn. Try it!

Brown Sugared Popcorn Recipe

2 quarts popped corn
2 cups brown sugar
2 tablespoons butter
1/2 cup water

Put butter in saucepan, and when melted add sugar and water. Bring to boiling-point, and let boil sixteen minutes. Pour over corn, and stir until every kernel is well coated with sugar.

Also, have a peek at my December 2009 newsletter (#033) for Fannie Farmer's chocolate cream candy recipes. These delicious homemade chocolates would make a perfect candy treat for St. Valentine's Day. (You'll find a handy link to the ezine back issues below.)
