Welcome

Hi,

Well, we are in November already, with winter fast approaching. Here in central Ontario, our winters aren't too bad, generally, even with the snow. It's the freezing rain and icy road conditions that I don't look forward to. Thankfully, there are only a few days when it's best to stay indoors. On those days, I tend to get a little jealous of readers who live in warmer climates. ;-)

We celebrated our Canadian Thanksgiving in mid October; however, if you live south of the border in the U.S., your Thanksgiving Weekend is almost upon you. Be sure to visit the Thanksgiving section on the site for some great dessert ideas. There is still time to make some traditional Thanksgiving Day treats. I've added more Thanksgiving dessert recipes this year, and I think you will like them. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Speaking of new recipes added; there have been quite a few new pages added to the site these past weeks. I found so many great recipes that I got carried away with adding them to the site, and I forgot to send newsletters. Once you poke around the site a bit and see the new additions, though, I hope you'll forgive me. There are some wonderful dessert recipes featured.

Some readers have asked recently whether I have a page on Facebook. Sorry, not as yet. When it comes to Web 2.0 and social networking, I'm a bit behind. There has simply been so much to do on my own site in my efforts to make it better for you that I haven't had the time to create a Facebook page. However, it's something I plan to do in the coming year, and I look forward to seeing you there. Once my page is live, I'll announce it in my blog and newsletter.

Actually, I have added several social pages to my site where you can create your own Facebook-like webpage/mini-blog and share recipes, poems, and thoughts with others, plus leave comments. Your new pages will even be announced in my blog. Please check this out in the "Your Party Line" section; it's easy and fun to do, and we would love you to share with us.

Also check out the old time radio broadcasts that I've added to the site. They're fun to listen to while browsing through the old recipes.

Well, I need to send this ezine off while it's still early in the evening.

Thank you for visiting.

Till next time,

Don

P.S. Here's something special for you:

Grandma McIlmoyle's Little Dessert Book (depicted above) features 23 old-fashioned dessert recipes that Grandma collected in a little notebook and wrote in her own handwriting. She began her little recipe book while homesteading on the Alberta prairie in the early 1900s.

You'll not only view the recipes as Grandma wrote them in her little book, but I have also included a transcript of the recipes for easier reading. It's my little tribute to Grandma and her recipes, and the ebook is yours for the downloading.

There is no charge for it.

The PDF ebook is my gift to you for subscribing!

Enjoy reading it.

Note: You won't find the link to this PDF ebook on my website. This link is only here for you, so take advantage of it and download your copy of Grandma McIlmoyle's Little Dessert Book now.

The ebook is in Adobe Acrobat PDF format so you need the no-cost Adobe Reader to view its contents. Adobe Reader is already installed on most PC and Mac computers.

As time goes on, I plan to offer other complimentary ebooks to my newsletter subscribers only, so keep watching in future newsletters.

Old Fashioned Recipe

This month for late Fall and Thanksgiving we feature a traditional Pennsylvania Dutch recipe for making old time molasses cake.

Mary's Pennsylvania Dutch Molasses Cake Recipe
With Chocolate Icing

For Mary's old fashioned molasses cakes, she creamed together 1 cup of light brown sugar and 2 tablespoonfuls of butter. Then added 1 cup of New Orleans molasses. The molasses had been allowed to come to a boil, then cooled.

She sifted into the mixture 4 cups of flour alternately with 1 cup of sweet milk in which 2 even teaspoonfuls of soda had been dissolved. She beat all well together, then added yolk of one large egg, and lastly the stiffly beaten white of the egg. Beat the mixture again and bake in 2 square layer cake pans in a hot oven about 25 minutes.

This is an excellent cake if directions are closely followed.

Chocolate Icing Recipe For Molasses Cakes

Boil 1 scant half cup water with 1 cup sugar until it spins a thread, or forms a soft, firm ball in cold water. Pour slowly over the stiffly beaten white of egg, beating while it is being poured. Melt 2 squares or 2 ounces of unsweetened chocolate by standing the bowl containing it in hot water. Add 1 teaspoonful hot water to chocolate. Stir the egg and sugar mixture slowly into the melted chocolate. Beat until stiff enough to spread on cake.

And...

For those readers who are not keen on the taste of molasses, here's an old Pennsylvania Dutch recipe for Cinnamon Cake:

Aunt Sarah's Dutch Cinnamon Cake Recipe

1 cup sugar
2 cups flour
1 egg
1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
Piece of butter the size of egg
Pinch of salt
1 cup milk
A little grated nutmeg

Beat the butter to a cream and gradually add the sugar. Then add the unbeaten egg and beat all together thoroughly. Add milk and flour and beat hard for five minutes. Add baking powder, salt and nutmeg. Pour into two small greased pie-tins and before putting in oven sprinkle sugar and cinnamon over top.

This is an excellent breakfast cake, easily and quickly made.

Enjoy!
