Easy Dessert Recipes Ezine -- 029 May 01, 2009 |
WelcomeHi,Yes, a long time has passed since the last newsletter! Too long, and I apologize for the break in your subscription. A year ago, the sudden hospitalization of our elderly aunt followed by her long recovery and eventual move to a nursing home seemed to capture every spare moment. Unfortunately, some tasks needed to be placed on hold, including the newsletters, then one month flowed into the next and soon a year had passed by. Now, your old-time Dessert Recipes Ezine is back! To thank you for your patience, I have created something special for you:
Grandma McIlmoyle's Little Dessert Book (depicted above) features 23 old-fashioned dessert recipes that Grandma collected in a little notebook and wrote in her own handwriting. She began her little recipe book while homesteading on the Alberta prairie in the early 1900s. You'll not only view the recipes as Grandma wrote them in her little book, but I have also included a transcript of the recipes for easier reading. It's my tribute to Grandma and her recipes, and the ebook is yours for the downloading. Let me be clear: There is no charge for it. The ebook is my gift to you! Enjoy reading it. (Note: You won't find the link to this PDF ebook on my website. The ebook is only for subscribers to my newsletter. To download your copy of Grandma McIlmoyle's Little Dessert Book, subscribe to my newsletter now, and you'll receive the special download link in the next edition of my newsletter.) The ebook is in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format so you need Adobe Reader to view the contents. Adobe Reader is already installed on most PC and Mac computers. As time goes on, I plan to offer other complimentary ebooks to my newsletter subscribers only. They will be available for download from a special web page, so keep watching in coming newsletters for an announcement. In other news, here in Peterborough the winter snow has melted, spring has finally sprung, and the lawns will soon need cutting. It's so nice to have the milder weather again. Spring and fall are my favorite times of the year. I don't do well in the hot, humid days of summer when the temperature hovers at 30°C. Hot weather makes me lazy, and I don't need any encouragement in that department. So, I plan to enjoy the spring weather while it lasts. Thank you for visiting. Till next time, Don Website UpdatesWelcome to this month's updates:There are lots of new features and dessert recipes that have been added since the last newsletter, so have fun poking around the site. A number of site visitors have contacted me, curious how I came to build a website filled with old-fashioned dessert recipes. So, I created several new pages to introduce the source of my recipes (my mother and my grandmothers) and to share my website story. Visit my About Us page. I have also added some vintage St. Patrick's Day recipes to the site this year, and although the St. Patrick's Day holiday has passed, some of the holiday recipes will make great desserts for serving to friends and family the year-round. And More New Pages To ComeSee the next edition of this newsletter for additional new recipe pages.Old Fashioned RecipeThis month features two old-fashioned recipes for pie that call for ingredients not often associated with dessert pies today: vinegar and carrots. That's right, vinegar and carrots! Our ancestors made clever use of whatever ingredients they had on hand, as stores were often distant and considered expensive. You'll be pleasantly surprised at the delicious taste of these old-time pies from Grandma's day. These old-fashioned pie recipes are taken from one of Mom's recipe scrapbooks, circa 1929. Vinegar Pie Recipe One egg, 1 heaping tablespoon flour, 1 cup sugar, 1-1/2 tablespoons sharp vinegar, 1 cup cold water, nutmeg to taste. Beat the egg, flour, and sugar together. Add the vinegar and cold water. Flavor with nutmeg, and bake with 2 crusts (top and bottom). Carrot Pie Recipe One cup cooked carrots (mashed), 1/2 cup sugar, 2 eggs, 1 pint sweet milk, 2 tablespoons molasses, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon ginger. Bake in one crust. Molasses is optional and may be omitted. Enjoy!
