Welcome

Hi,

Happy Valentine's Day on February 14th!

We are nearing St. Valentine's Day again. A wise Lord Avebury once said, "It is not enough to love those who are near and dear to us. We must show them that we do so." And one of the ways we can show them is to use Grandma's old-time dessert recipes to make something extra special that they'd like to eat -- a delicious Valentine treat.

Here in Peterborough, we are still in the icy grip of an old-fashioned winter. We just received nearly 36 centimetres of snow (that's 14 inches), and the word is another storm might be heading this way from the Great Plains area of the U.S. (Thanks guys, but we really don't need any more snow!) Oh well, the spring weather will come eventually. Meanwhile, I'll cocoon in my cosy office and add more recipes to the website for you.

Thank you for visiting.

Till next time,

Don

Old Fashioned Recipe

Since Saint Valentine's Day traditionally brings thoughts of love and hoped-for romance, a vintage "Hope Chest Cake" is appropriate for this month's featured recipe.

In Grandma's day, it was a common tradition that a young unmarried woman anticipating her eventual married life would begin to store special clothing and household linens in a "hope chest" or "wedding chest." Unmarried girls in Great Britain often called them "glory boxes."

This unique cake isn't hard to make, and it tastes and looks absolutely delicious. Like a hope chest, it's filled with all the best things. And it's perfect for serving at your next St. Valentines Day party and will be a real conversation starter.

Hope Chest Cake Recipe

This old-fashioned Hope Chest Cake recipe is taken from one of Mom's recipe scrapbooks, circa 1929.

INGREDIENTS:

1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
3 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon cloves
1/4 teaspoon allspice
3/4 cup sour milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 orange, rind and juice
3/4 cup almonds
1 cup raisins
1/2 cup dates

METHOD:

Cream shortening, add sugar and cream in well, then work in the eggs. Sift dry ingredients and add alternately with the milk (save a little flour for the fruit mixture). Then add the vanilla extract, and orange juice. After removing all of the white skin, grind the orange rind, nuts, and fruit, and add the mixture, floured, to the batter. Turn into loaf pan which has been lined with wax paper. Bake in moderate oven (350°F) for 1-1/2 hours.

Decorate with hinges and a lock made of banana icing, or an icing of choice; or, cover completely with icing, and add hinges and a lock of a contrasting color. Enjoy.
