Welcome

Hi Everybody,

Although summer has not officially arrived in Peterborough (that happens on June 21st, a day called the Summer Solstice), it surely seems like summer. Today's high temperature is 32°C (89.6°F), and the sounds of lawn mowers are everywhere.

A more pleasing sound than a noisy lawn mower on a hot, humid day is the tinkling of ice in a tall, cool beverage. In this issue, you will find an old-time summer drink recipe for making "Summer Oatmeal Drink." The drink is easy to make, good tasting and well worth trying, and it's a proven thirst quencher from yesteryear.

Also, you will find links to three new recipe pages on my website that feature old-time Italian dessert recipes that you will want to try. Thank you for visiting my site.

Till next month.

Best regards,

Don

Old Fashioned Recipe

This month I am spotlighting an old-fashioned summer drink recipe. Summer oatmeal drink was quite popular in Great Grandma's day, and it's a surprisingly good thirst quencher. Our forebears didn't have the convenience of a corner store to purchase cold beverages nor did they have the ready cash; they used the simple ingredients they had available to make their own thirst quenchers. Try it and see what you think.

This old-fashioned summer drink recipe is taken from "Dr. Chase's Third, Last and Complete Receipt Book," Memorial Edition by Dr. A. W. Chase, 1891.

Summer Oatmeal Drink Recipe

For the field or workshop, nourishing as well as allaying thirst. Make oatmeal into a thin gruel; then add a little salt, and sugar to taste, with a little grated nutmeg, well stirred in while yet warm. Chill before serving.

This [drink] was first suggested by the Church of England leaflets put out among the farmers and others to discourage them from carrying whiskey into the field.

Remarks. --If the above plan is too much trouble, although it is, indeed, very nourishing and satisfactory, take the Scotch plan of stirring raw oatmeal into the bucket of cold water and stir when dipped up to drink. As near as I could judge, 1/2 to 1 pint was stirred into a common 12-quart pail.

I drank of this at the building of the New York and Brooklyn Bridge, which I visited with my son while in New York in the Centennial year of 1876, on our way to Philadelphia, and we were highly pleased with it. The workmen drank of it freely, preferring it to plain water very much. --Dr. Chase

Here's a couple more old-time summer drinks for you to try:

Strawberry Cordial Recipe

One quart strawberries (fully ripe), 1 lemon, 1 orange, 3 pints water, 1 pound sifted sugar; mash the strawberries through a sieve; add juice of lemon and orange and the water, and work together; let stand 2 hours; put the sugar into a bowl and strain the juice over it, stirring till sugar is dissolved; stand on ice before serving; a delicious drink.

Maraschino Lemonade Recipe

The juice of four lemons, twelve tablespoons sugar, eight cups water, one cup maraschino syrup, and a few cherries.
