Easy Dessert Recipes Ezine -- 005 August 04, 2005 |
Edited Archival VersionWelcomeHi Everybody! Are You Enjoying Summer?I hope you are having a great summer. It's certainly a hot one (depending on where you live in the world). Here in Peterborough, we have had unusually hot, dry weather with the daily temperature sometimes hovering at 30-32°C (86-90°F) or above. With the high humidity levels, it feels more like the high 30s.Personally, I don't handle heat well, and I prefer to spend most of my time indoors where it's cooler. I also indulge in frozen treats to keep cool, and on my website you will find some old-fashioned ice cream recipes to make delicious frozen treats. These rich, creamy ice creams are cooling to the body and absolutely delicious. You will want to try them! Enjoy this newsletter and many thanks for supporting my website. Old-Fashioned RecipeOld-Fashioned Sponge Cake RecipeThis old-fashioned recipe is taken from "The White House Cook Book" by Hugo Ziemann, Steward of the White House, and Mrs. F. L. Gillette, a celebrated 19th-century cookbook author, published by The Saalfield Publishing Company, New York, in 1913.Two cups of sifted white sugar, two cups of flour measured before sifting, ten eggs, separated. Stir the yolks and sugar together until perfectly light; add a pinch of salt; beat the whites of the eggs to a very stiff froth and add them with the flour, after beating together lightly; flavor with lemon. Bake in a moderate oven about forty-five minutes. Baking powder is an improvement to this cake, using two large teaspoonfuls.
